Winston-Salem, N.C. -
The seventh-ranked Deacons had a win against sixth-ranked North Carolina in their collective grasp, but the Tar Heels prevailed, 4-2, on Wednesday afternoon at Leighton Tennis Stadium.
The Deacons dropped the all-important doubles point, a result that would come back to haunt them.
Wake Forest evened the score with Steven Forman's 6-2, 6-4 victory at number five, but North Carolina responded with wins at number two and three.
The Deacons would need to win the remaining three singles matches in order to rally for the victory. It looked very possible with Andrew Hamar leading by a set at number four, Todd Paul leading in the first set at number one and Jason Morgenstern up two breaks in the first set.
Paul would eventually wear down 46th-ranked Ben Carlotti and win, 7-5, 6-3. Morgenstern was in the driver's seat after winning the first set, 7-5.
Hamar dropped his second set, 6-1, but came back with a vengence in the third set to lead 5-3. His opponent, Sebastian Guejman, turned it up a notch. He broke Hamar's serve twice to win the final four games and seal the team with for the Tar Heels, 4-2.
Morgenstern's match was abandoned early in the second set.
Cory Parr's loss at number two snapped a team-best nine-match winning streak. Paul improved to 13-3 against nationally-ranked opponents this season.
Wake Forest hits the road for the next six matches beginning with 51st-ranked Maryland on Friday in College Park.
