WINSTON-SALEM, NC - The 35th-ranked Wake Forest menˇ¦s tennis team fought off No. 29 Georgia Tech with a 4-3 victory at the Wake Forest Indoor Tennis Center Sunday afternoon. The Yellow Jackets won two doubles matches to capture the team point but then the Demon Deacons battled back to win four of six singles matches to give Wake Forest a 1-0 start in league play and extending its winning streak to seven matches.

Wake Forest doubles team of David Loewenthal (So., Franklin Lakes, NJ) and Trent Brendon (Jr., Victorville, CA), ranked 27th in the nation, beat the No. 51 team of Roger Anderson and David Wright 8-6 in the No. 1 doubles match. Mike Murray (Jr., St. Petersburg, FL) and Derrick Spice (Fr., N. Olmsted, OH) lost the No. 2 doubles match 8-6 to Georgia Techˇ¦s 56th-ranked pair, Scott Schnugg and West Nott. The Deacs dropped the No. 3 doubles match as Justin Kaufmann (Sr., Mission Hills, KS) and David Bere (Jr., Midland, MI) fell 8-6 to Joao Menano and Fabio Campos.

Loewenthal, ranked 24th in singles, lost to No. 26 Anderson 7-6 (4), 6-3 in the No. 1 singles match. Kaufmann lost to Nott 6-3, 6-4 in the No. 6 singles match, but the Demon Deacons took the rest. Bere defeated Wright in straight sets in the No. 2 match, winning 6-1, 6-4. Spice fought back in the No. 3 match to beat No. 100 Menano 6-7 (3), 6-3, 6-3. Murray took care of Moros in straight sets, winning the No. 4 match 6-1, 6-4 and Brendon handed Schnugg a 6-2, 6-3 setback in the No. 5 match.

Wake Forest improves its record to 7-1, 1-0 ACC with the win and Georgia Tech falls to 5-5, 0-2 ACC with the loss. The Demon Deacons return to action Sunday, March 10, when they travel to Greenville, SC to take on No. 67 Furman at 1:30 p.m.
