Deacons Earn Sunday Sweep of Minnesota, East Tennessee State

Feb. 11, 2007

Results

Winston-Salem, N.C. - The Wake Forest men's tennis team bounced back from its first loss of the season in dominating fashion with a pair of victories against nationally-ranked opponents on Sunday. In the afternoon, the Deacons beat 31st-ranked Minnesota 5-1 and defeated 45th-ranked East Tennessee State 4-1 in the nightcap.

The win against Minnesota was especially impressive in light of the Gophers 5-1 victory on Saturday against VCU.  It was the Rams who edged Wake Forest on Friday night. Those results gave the Deacons an unofficial victory in the triangular.

After losing the doubles points in three straight matches, the Deacons (7-1) addressed that concern by winning all six doubles matches on Sunday. Head coach Jeff Zinn reunited Team Andrew as Andrew Hamar and Andrew Brasseaux won both of their matches at number three. They improved their dual match record to 2-1. Cory Parr and Charles Sartor won both of their matches at number two. Todd Paul and Mariusz Adamski captured two victories in the number one position.

Against Minnesota, the Deacons were paced by Paul, the senior All-American, who sailed past 77th-ranked Andres Osorio 6-0, 6-4. Freshman Jason Morgenstern had no trouble with Sion Wilkins 6-0, 6-1. The Deacons also got three-set victories from Adamski and Steven Forman. Two matches were altered due to time concerns. Parr's match with 58th-ranked Raoul Schwark was decided by an early third-set tiebreaker. Minnesota won that match for its only point. Hamar's match with D.J. Geatz was abandoned with the score tied at four in the second set.

In the nightcap, Wake Forest picked up where it left off. Paul, Parr and Forman picked up easy straight set wins. Adamski and Morgenstern were heading to the third set, but their matches were abandoned due to time concerns.

Wake Forest returns to action Wednesday at 39th-ranked South Carolina. First serve in Columbia is set for 2:00 p.m.
