Wake Men's Tennis Starts Season With Two Wins
Deacs roll past ECU, UNC-W on Saturday.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- The Wake Forest men's tennis team opened the
2000 season with wins over East Carolina and UNC Wilmington at the Wake
Forest Indoor Tennis Center on Saturday. The Deacons defeated East Carolina
7-0 and UNC Wilmington 6-1.
In the match against ECU, Wake won all six singles matches in
straight sets. Raul Munoz played at the No. 1 position, defeating Alexandre
Girard 6-2, 6-3. At the No. 2 position, freshman Miachael Murray defeated
Jon Walton 6-0, 6-2, while Michael Berger defeated Tobias Boren 6-3, 6-4 at
the third position. Justin Kaufmann played at No. 4, Brett Mauro at No. 5
and David Bere competed in the sixth position. In doubles action in the
first match, Munoz and Murray defeated Girard and Oliver Thalen 8-1. Berger
and Mauro won their match over Boren and Nicholas Jaffrelot also by an 8-1
score, while Andres Guzman and Mark Grae defeated Walton and Brad Sullivan
8-2.
Against UNC Wilmington, Wake used a different lineup with Murray
playing at No. 1. Murray defeated James Collieson 6-4, 6-4. Berger followed
Murray at the second position with a win over Mauro Difilipo 6-0, 6-2.
Mauro won at the No. 3 seed, defeating Todd Weinstein 6-3, 6-4. In doubles,
Wake won all three matches with Munoz and Murray once again playing at No.
1. They defeated Robbie Brown and Vitaliy Pereverzev 8-1. Kaufmann and
Berger won at the second position 8-0 over Collieson and Adam Greiner.
Guzman and Grae competed at No. 3 doubles, defeating Weinstein and Paul
Cruess 8-2.
With the wins, Wake Forest is now 2-0. The Deacons will return to
action Saturday, Feb. 12 when they host both the Purdue Boilermaker and the
UNC Greensboro Spartans. The Purdue match starts at 10 a.m. with the UNC
Greensboro match to follow. Both matches will be played at the Wake Forest
Indoor Tennis Center.
