WINSTON-SALEM, NC - The ACC Men's Tennis Indoor Championships got under way Friday at the Wake Forest University Indoor Tennis Center. Four Demon Deacons advanced to the third round in singles play and one Wake Forest doubles team advanced to the third round as well. David Loewenthal, Mike Murray and David Bere all took advantage of first-round byes and earned second round singles wins, while Justin Kaufmann picked up two wins in straight sets to also advance to the third round of singles play.

After disposing of Virginia's Greg Alpert 6-0, 6-4 in the first round, Kaufmann took out No. 35 Xavier Luscan of Florida State 6-2, 6-3 in the second round. Kaufmann, a senior from Mission Hills, KS, will face Nicholas Monroe from North Carolina at 11:30 a.m. Saturday morning in the third round.

Murray picked apart Scott Schnugg from Georgia Tech 6-4, 3-6, 6-1. He will face North Carolina's Trysten Meniane Saturday at 10:30 a.m. in the third round. Bere topped Florida State's Chip Webb 6-3, 6-4. He will take on Duke's Jason Zimmerman at 11:30 a.m. in the third round. Loewenthal, who is ranked 30th in the nation, defeated Peter Shults of Duke 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, but has withdrawn from the tournament because of an injury to his right quadriceps.

Trent Brendon, Mirko Ivanda and Derrick Spice each won their first round matches before falling in the second round. Brendon beat Greg Archer of North Carolina 7-5, 6-0 before falling to Zimmerman 6-3, 6-7 (8), 6-3. He will take on Georgia Tech's West Nott 8:30 a.m. Saturday in the consolation draw. Ivanda got past Dan Lempa from Virginia 6-4, 5-7, 6-2, but couldn't stop North Carolina's Geoff Boyd, falling 2-6, 7-6 (7), 6-3. He will face Alpert at 9:30 a.m. Saturday in the consolation draw. Spice defeated Jason Romesburg of Virginia 6-4, 6-1 in the first round before dropping to No. 32 Roger Anderson from Georgia Tech 7-5, 6-3. He will play Rodrigo Laub from Florida State at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in the consolation draw.

In doubles action Murray and Spice beat Nolen and Romesburg from Virginia 8-5 in the first round and their second round opponents withdrew. They will face Nott and Schnugg from Georgia Tech in the third round at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday. Bere and Kaufmann took out Virginia's Curtis and Montanden 8-4 before falling to Boyd and Monroe of North Carolina 8-4. Brendon and Loewenthal, ranked 48th in the nation, withdrew after Loewenthal's injury. Perkins teamed up with Terrapin Harris Causevic to win first round matchup with Cavaliers Alpert and Snead 8-4. They lost to Blue Devils Shults and Zimmerman 8-6 in the second round.
