Scouting the Cavaliers
Virginia has used a strong defense en route to an 11-3-2 record on the year and 5-2-0 in the ACC -- good for second place in the league standings. The Cavaliers defense, led by goalkeeper Ryan Burke, has recorded 10 shutouts and a 0.84 goals against average. Virginia has dropped two of its last three matches, including a 2-1 overtime loss at home to arch-rival Virginia Tech. Yannick Reyering and Adam Cristman lead the Cavalier attack. Reyering has a team-high 11 goals and 23 points, while Cristman has seven goals and five assists. Jeremy Barlow leads the Cavaliers with nine assists.
Last Year Against Virginia
The second-ranked Wake Forest men's soccer team jumped out to an early 1-0 lead, but were unable to hold off Virginia as the Cavaliers notched a pair of second-half goals to get past the Demon Deacons, 2-1, in the ACC opener for both squads on Sept. 17, 2004. Virginia and Wake Forest met for a second time in the ACC Tournament. The Cavaliers, again, slipped past the Deacons, 2-1.
Last Time Out
The No. 19 Wake Forest men's soccer team spotted No. 17 NC State an early 2-0 first-half lead that the Demon Deacons were unable to overcome in a 2-1 loss last Sunday. The victory for the Wolfpack was their first over Wake Forest since 1995 -- ending the Demon Deacons 12-match winning streak.
Ellington Out
Wake Forest team physicians confirmed that Demon Deacon junior forward Mark Ellington suffered a mild stroke on Wednesday. The Swansboro native was hospitalized at Wake Forest Babtist Medical Center Wednesday night for observation.
Ellington will not be available for Wake Forest in its ACC regular season finale against Virginia at Spry Stadium Friday night. His status for the rest of the season is unknown.
Ellington, who played in 17 matches and started 15, leads Wake Forest in points (17) and goals (8). He ranks seventh in the ACC in goals.
