WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- First team All-ACC forward Jeremiah White scored with 2:08 remaining in regulation as the top-seeded Wake Forest men's soccer team defeated Old Dominion 1-0 at Spry Stadium on Wednesday night. The Deacons advance to the Sweet 16 for the third time in school history.

White's goal started with a pass from Brian Carroll. White received the ball at the top corner of the penalty area. Closely guarded by a Monarch defender, White cut three ways before finally breaking free. His left-footed shot found the bottom left-hand corner of the net. It was the only ball to get behind Old Dominion goalkeeper Samuel Cameron who finished with 14 saves, many of which from point blank range.

"I felt if we kept applying pressure, we would get something out of it," White said. "We just had to keep plugging away. We had a game plan and we just stuck with it."

The Deacons (15-1-4) created many quality scoring opportunities and outshot the Monarchs by a 20-5 margin. Old Dominion held the fort for almost 88 minutes before Wake Forest broke through.

"As we anticipated, ODU proved to be a very worthy opponent," Wake Forest head coach Jay Vidovich said. "It took us a while to break them down. But our guys took control and stepped it up on defense. We created a lot of good chances and their goalkeeper just had some great saves."

Wake Forest held a 10-2 edge in shots at halftime after eight first half saves by Cameron. Bobby Gehring and Scott Sealy each had tremendous scoring opportunities in the first 45 minutes.

Old Dominion's best chance of the game was in the 55th minute when Attila Vendegh, the CAA's leading scorer, came streaking down the left side. He appeared to have a half-step on two Wake Forest defenders. But when he unleashed a shot from 15 yards away, it was blocked out of harm's way by Wake Forest's Michael Parkhurst.

Goalkeeper William Hesmer needed to make just one save to post the team's 11th shutout of the season.

The Deacons advance to Saturday's round of 16. Wake Forest will host Clemson who advanced past Coastal Carolina on penalty kicks on Wednesday night in a 1-1 game. The game will be played on Saturday night at Spry Stadium with a 7:00 p.m. kickoff.

Old Dominion finishes its season with a 10-9-1 mark.

The game was played in front of 3,113 supportive fans at Spry Stadium. It was the fourth home crowd of at least 3,000 this season.
