WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- American University scored two goals in the first
six minutes of their first round NCAA Tournament game and cruised to a
2-1 victory over Ohio State on Friday night at Spry Stadium on the
campus on Wake Forest University.
American (12-7-2) advances to the second round on Sunday against Wake
Forest. The Eagles will play Wake Forest on their home field where the
Demon Deacons own a 10-game winning streak. The Buckeyes end their
season with a 10-7-2 record.
The Eagles struck first just three minutes into the game on Jeff
Kinney's first goal of the season. A Jonathon Colton corner kick found
Larry McDonald who headed the ball across the mouth of the goal. Kinney
was waiting and buried it to give American the early one goal lead.
At 5:58, the Eagles extended their lead when Ohio State failed to clear
the ball from harm's way. Andrew Herman corralled the loose ball just
outside the penalty area and dribbled to the top of the box. His blast
from 18 yards found the back of the net and was his ninth goal of the
season.
The teams went to halftime with the same score. The Eagles did not let
up in the second 45 minutes, outshooting Ohio State 10-4. Defensively,
American put the clamps on the Buckeyes. Ohio State's leading scorer,
Andy Rosenband, a junior transfer who played his first two season at
Wake Forest, mustered just two shots, neither of which were on goal.
Despite the control American maintained for most of the game, Ohio
State sliced the lead in half in the 89th minute on a goal by Andy
Kreinbrink. He was assisted on the play by Tony Earp. American played
keep away for the final 90 seconds to end the late Buckeye comeback
attempt.
Wake Forest and American will meet on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. at Spry
Stadium in the second round. The Demon Deacons will be well-rested
after a first round bye.
