WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Ben Stafford scored at the 69:40 mark to give the fifth-seeded Wake Forest men's soccer team a 2-1 victory over the Virginia Commonwealth Rams in the first round of the NCAA Tournament at Spry Stadium Sunday.

Wake Forest took an early lead on a goal by Chris Lonteen at the 8:03 mark. VCU tied the game at 27:59 when Kevin Jeffrey scored to tie the game. The two teams headed to halftime tied at 1-1. The game remained tied until Stafford's game-winning goal.

Stafford and Lonteen each had an assist to go with their goals. Aaron Thomas also added an assist for the Deacs.

With the win, Wake Forest improves to 13-2-5 and advances to the second round. The Deacs will host the Furman Palladins who defeated North Carolina 2-1 in double overtime. VCU ends its season at 14-7-1.
