The No. 1 Wake Forest men's soccer team finished the 2007 regular season with a 3-1 victory over Virginia on Friday night at Spry Stadium. The Demon Deacons will enter post-season play with a 15-1-2 record, the most regular season wins in the program's 27 year history.
With a 6-1-1 conference mark, the Deacons wrapped up the season in the ACC's runner-up slot, just behind Boston College. Friday night's loss sets Virginia at 10-6-2 and 1-5-2 for the regular season.
The Deacons got an early lead in the match, taking a goal on Michael Lahoud's charge for the UVA net in the 5th minute. The unassisted score was the Annandale, Va. native's fourth for the season.
Zack Schilawski netted the eventual game-winner in the 35th minute, taking a forward pass from Lahoud to net a left side shot from nine yards out. It was Schilawski's seventh goal and fourth game-winner for the year.
The Cavaliers caught the Deacons off guard just before the half when Ross LaBauex slipped a long range shot past Wake goalkeeper Brian Edwards. WFU's Lyle Adams stepped in the net to try and clear the ball but LaBauex's mark was on target and landed in the right pocket to keep UVA within one point of the Deacs at the 43rd minute.
Adams, Wake's defender from Orlando, Fla., added an insurance goal in the 70th minute, grabbing a free kick from Sam Cronin. The shot set the final Deacon tally at 3-1, for only the fifth Wake Forest win over Virginia through the teams' 40-match history.
The Demon Deacons will begin post season play at the ACC Tournament in Cary, N.C. which kicks off on Tuesday, November 13.
