Demon Deacons Blank Boston College, 4-0, In First Round of 2005 ACC Tournament

Nov. 8, 2005

Box Score

CARY, N.C. - Wake Forest junior defender Steven Curfman scored a goal and added an assist to lead the No. 8 seed Demon Deacons past No. 9 seed Boston College, 4-0, in the first round of the 2005 ACC Men's Soccer Tournament at SAS Soccer Complex Tuesday.

Curfman put the Deacons ahead in the 38th minute. The Raleigh, N.C. native dribbled through the Eagles' defense and fired a shot from just outside the penalty box into the upper corner past a sprawling Issey Maholo. The goal was Curfman's fourth of the season.

Wake Forest continued to assault the Boston College penalty area. The Eagles netminder, who had five saves in the opening 45 minutes, kept the score, 1-0, into halftime. The Deacons outshot Boston College, 10-2, in the first-half.

Wake Forest finally broke through scoring three second-half goals. Senior All-American Justin Moose made the Deacon lead, 2-0, with his fifth goal of the season at 62:04. Curfman played a beautiful ball between two Eagles that sent Moose one-on-one. The forward slotted the ball home for his first career goal in ACC Tournament action.

The Deacs struck just moments later when junior Wells Thompson scored on a tremendous individual effort. The midfielder took the ball from the near touchline and dribbled toward the penalty area, beating two Boston College defenders along the way, before hammering a shot into the low corner. The goal was Thompson's fifth of the season and was unassisted.

Freshman Evan Brown closed the scoring for Wake Forest with his first career goal. The midfielder blasted a shot from the top of the box at 86:57. Sophomore goalkeeper Brian Edwards, who served the ball to Brown, was credited with his first career assist.

The Demon Deacons dominated the match, holding a 24-7 advantage in shots. The 24 shots were a season-high for Wake Forest. Edwards picked up his eighth shutout of the season and 17th of his career.

Wake Forest advances into the quarterfinals and will face top-seed Maryland on Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. The Terrapins defeated the Deacons, 3-1, earlier this season.
