WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -
Virginia substitute Joe Vide scored the golden goal in the 93rd minute to give the Cavaliers a 2-1 victory over Wake Forest before a national TV audience on Fox Soccer Channel and 3,647 fans in Spry Stadium Friday night. The Demon Deacons close the regular season at 10-6-2 overall and 1-5-2 in the ACC, while Virginia improves to 12-3-2 overall and 6-2-0 in the conference.
Wake Forest grabbed the lead in the 53rd minute on a beautiful goal from freshman Michael Lahoud. Senior All-American Justin Moose spotted Lahoud streaking through the Cavalier defense and split a pair of defenders with a perfectly timed pass. Lahoud fired a shot into the upper near corner past Virginia netminder Ryan Burke at 52:10. Lahoud is second on the Deacs with six goals. Moose picked up his eighth assist of 2005 and 29th for his career.
The Cavaliers came right back and evened the match just over three minutes later. Virginia defender Dane Murphy played a long ball over the top of the Wake Forest defense. Sophomore midfielder Nico Colaluca then beat Wake Forest defender Steven Curfman on the right wing and drove the ball toward the 18-yard box before blasting a shot into the far corner at 55:40. For Colaluca, the goal was his second of the season.
The game remained tied until overtime, but the Demon Deacons had one scoring chance after another. Junior Wells Thompson had two shots from just outside the penalty area that Burke stopped. Freshmen, Jamie Franks and Sam Cronin, had golden chances within a minute of one another midway through the second stanza. Franks found some space inside the Virginia penalty area, but his shot was stopped by Burke. Then, Cronin's blast from 25-yards was barely tipped wide of the post by Burke for a Wake Forest corner kick.
Burke kept Wake Forest off the scoreboard long enough for the Cavaliers to net the gamewinner.
Virginia junior Adam Christman chased down a ball deep in the Demon Deacon defensive third and crossed a pass to Vide just outside the Wake Forest penalty area. Vide took a touch and blasted a perfectly placed shot into the far corner past a leaping Demon Deacon goalkeeper Brian Edwards. The goal was Vide's second of the season, while Christman picked up his sixth assist.
Burke finished with a season-high seven saves. He faced 15 shots from the Deacs on the night. Wake Forest held a commanding, 15-7, lead in shots. In fact, the Deacs took nine of the first 10 shots in the second half. After the Colaluca goal, Wake Forest limited Virginia to just three shots the rest of the match.
The victory is the seventh straight for the Cavaliers over the Demon Deacons. Wake Forest also played in its sixth overtime match of 2005 and dropped their record to 1-3-2 in those matches.
The Demon Deacons now await their seeding for the upcoming ACC Tournament. With a Clemson loss at Duke Saturday night, Wake Forest would earn the seventh seed and play second-seeded Virginia on Wednesday in the ACC Quarterfinals. It would mark the fifth straight year that the Demon Deacons and Cavaliers would meet in the ACC Tournament. A Clemson draw or victory against the Blue Devils, the Deacs would finish eighth and face ninth-seeded Boston College in the first round match on Tuesday.
