DURHAM,N.C. - On a cold Friday night at Koskinen Stadium, the top-ranked
Wake Forest men's soccer team upended Duke, 2-0, in Durham, N.C. to
capture its first Atlantic Coast Conference regular season title in
school history.
The deciding goal came at the 61:31 mark in the second half as Duke's
Adam Guren (Kirtland Hills, Ohio) took down Wake Forest's Jeremiah White
in the goal box with an empty net to give the Demon Deacons a penalty
kick opportunity. White capitalized with is eighth goal of the season
past Blue Devil goalkeeper Justin Trowbridge (Tampa, Fla.). The foul by
Guren was given a red card as the senior defender had already received a
yellow card in the first half. The Blue Devils were forced to play the
final 28 minutes down a man.
Prior to the penalty kick, Duke and Wake Forest played a very even match
as the Demon Deacons outshot the Blue Devils 3-1 in the first half.
Duke's best chance at a goal came at the 71:22 mark as junior Matt
Ahumada (Scottsdale, Ariz.) headed a ball which just went past the right
post. Wake Forest sealed the victory with two minutes remaining as
White received a cross from the left side by Ryan Alexander for his
second goal of the match. William Hesmer picked up the victory in goal
for Wake Forest with his sixth shutout of the season.
For the game, Wake Forest outsthot Duke 9-6. The Demon Deacons improve
to 12-0-4 overall and 4-0-2 in ACC action, while the Blue Devils fall to
10-6-1, 3-3 ACC.
Duke will next host Georgia State on Wednesday at 7:00 PM, which will
mark senior night for nine Blue Devils. Wake Forest will next play at
Davidson on Tuesday at 7:00 PM.
