Wake, Carolina Battle To A 1-1 Draw
Men's soccer scores early; Tar Heels notch equalizer with seven seconds remaining.
Oct. 30, 1999
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.--The fourth-ranked Wake Forest men's soccer
team fought to a 1-1 tie with the 21st-ranked North Carolina Tar Heels at
Spry Stadium in front of 2,961 fans Saturday night.
Junior forward Ben Stafford gave Wake a quick 1-0 lead with his
goal at the 5:49 mark off an assist from junior Kalle Siira.
The rest of the game was a defensive struggle. At the 53:36 mark
Wake Forest starting goalkeeper Sean Conner went down with a sprained ankle
and freshman Brad McEachern saw his first collegiate action in the goal as
he played the rest of the way. Each team had several chances to score in
the second half but neither could manage a goal until North Carolina's
Chris Carrieri scored with just seven seconds remaining in the game off an
assist from Daniel Jackson.
In the two overtime periods, the Tar Heels had several chances to
score, but McEachern and the Wake Forest defense came up big time and again
to preserve the tie.
