No. 14 Carolina Survives No. 17 Wake Forest, 1-0, In Overtime

Oct. 22, 2005

Box Score

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - North Carolina midfielder Michael Callahan scored the golden goal at 96:08 to give the No. 14 Tar Heels a 1-0 victory over No. 17 Wake Forest before a regular season school record crowd of 4,112 at Spry Stadium Saturday night. The attendance of 4,112 breaks the previous mark of 3,868 set on Oct. 25, 2003 against North Carolina.

Callahan took possession of a throw-in inside the Wake Forest penalty area. The freshman beat a Demon Deacon defender, then fired a shot from a near impossible angle that Wake Forest goalkeeper Brian Edwards managed to get a finger-tip on, but the ball ended up into the far upper corner of the net. The goal was unassisted and Callahan's first of 2005.

Despite the defeat, Edwards was magnificent for Wake Forest. The sophomore registered seven saves on the night, including two sprawling saves that seemed like definite goals for Carolina. Edwards denied Ben Hunter just before halftime and Corey Ashe midway through the second-half.

The Demon Deacons had the better part of the play for much of the evening. The Deacs' best chances came in the opening minutes. Freshman Michael Lahoud created havoc in the Tar Heels defensive third all night. The front-runner spotted fellow freshman Jamie Franks behind the Tar Heels defense in the third minute, but Frank's shot was right at Carolina goalkeeper Justin Hughes who made the save.

Just minutes later, senior All-American Justin Moose sent a perfectly placed pass to a charging Mark Ellington. Ellington's shot was headed toward the net, but Hughes pushed it just wide of the goal for a corner kick. On the ensuing corner kick, Wake Forest defender Julian Valentin's header glanced off the underside of the cross bar, but was cleared off the line.

Wake Forest midfielder Wells Thompson nearly sent the raucous crowd home happy with a blast from just outside the penalty area in the first overtime. The junior was all alone on the Carolina flank. Thompson beat a Tar Heel defender and rifled a low shot that beat Hughes, but sailed just wide of the far post.

Hughes was solid in net for Carolina. The junior made three saves and registered his second shutout of the season. It was the Tar Heel's eighth as a team -- senior Ford Williams has recorded the other six.

The overtime match is third for the Deacons in their last four matches and fifth this season. Wake Forest is 1-2-2 in those overtime games.

With the victory, North Carolina improves to 11-3-1 and 2-3-1 in the ACC, while the Demon Deacons drop to 9-4-2 and 1-3-2 in the league. The victory is the first for the Tar Heels over the Deacs since 2000 and the first regular season victory for Carolina at Spry Stadium since 1997.

Wake Forest returns to action at UNC Greensboro on Wednesday, Oct. 26. Kickoff with the Spartans is scheduled for 7 p.m.
