Oct. 19, 2005

Box Score

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The No. 17 Wake Forest men's soccer team used three second-half goals to race past Appalachian State, 3-1, Wednesday night at Spry Stadium. The Demon Deacons have defeated the Mountaineers 12 consecutive times.

Appalachian State (6-6-1) grabbed the match's first lead in the 39th minute. After Wake Forest defender Pat Phelan was whistled for a hand ball just outside the penalty area, the Mountaineers were awarded with a free kick. Juan Obregon's ensuing set piece was headed into the goal by substitute Happy Hall at 38:34. The goal was Hall's second of the season.

Appalachian State held onto the lead through halftime, but the Deacs awoke in the second-half. Wake Forest (9-3-2) tied the match at 50:33 on a goal from senior All-American Justin Moose. The forward chased down a pass behind the Mountaineer defense and slipped a shot underneath charging Appalachian State goalkeeper Alec Dufty. A pair of freshmen, Jamie Franks and Michael Lahoud, were each creditied with assists. The goal was Moose's fourth of the season and 15th of his career.

The Deacs continued to attack the Mountaineer goal and grabbed a 2-1 lead on Steven Curfman's free kick from 20-yards out in the 63rd minute. Curfman, who has hit the post or cross bar on three separate free kicks this season, curled a shot over the wall and past a diving Dufty into the back of the net. It was Curfman's second goal of the season.

Moose and Curfman then teamed up for Wake Forest's third score of the match. Moose dropped in a perfectly lofted pass to a streaking Curfman who went one-on-one with Dufty. Curfman blasted the shot past the netminder into the far corner at 67:41 for his second goal of the match. Curfman has recorded two multi-goal games over his career.

With three points in the match, Moose continues to rise on the Wake Forest all-time scoring list. Moose remains in eighth place with 58 career points (15 goals and 28 assists), but narrowed the gap on Nigel McNanara (62 points) for seventh place. Moose increased his already school record for career assists to 28.

The Deacs outshot the Mountaineers, 17-3, on the night. Dufty recorded six saves for Appalachian State. Wake Forest registered eight corner kicks, while the Mountaineers failed to record a single one.

The Demon Deacons return to action Saturday evening with a huge ACC match against rival North Carolina. Kickoff at Spry Stadium is scheduled for 7 p.m. Wake Forest will look to break its single-game regular season attendance record at Spry Stadium of 3,868.
