#2 Deacons Rally for a 2-2 Tie With #4 Clemson

Oct. 19, 2002

Final Stats

The second-ranked Wake Forest men's soccer team rallied from a two-goal first half deficit and came away with a 2-2 tie with fourth-ranked Clemson on Saturday night at Spry Stadium.

The Deacons saw their five-plus game shutout streak come to an end but the team remains unbeaten at 9-0-3. It is the best 12-game start in the program's history.

Amir Lowery scored on a Wake Forest corner kick with just less than 20 minutes remaining, putting the game in a 2-2 deadlock. Justin Moose served the ball into the box where Kelvin Jones headed it down for Lowery. For Lowery, a sophomore from Washington, D.C., it was his first career goal.

The Deacons sliced the lead in half in the 55th minute. Justin Moose found Jeremiah White at the top of the penalty area. White hesitated momentarily and looked to pass, freezing Clemson keeper Doug Warren. Then, White lined a right-footed blast inside the near post. White has scored goals in five of his last six games since missing several games early with an injury.

Wake Forest had held its last five opponents scoreless for a total span of more than 569 minutes. The last team to score against the Deacons was St. John's on September 21.

Clemson came into the game as the nation's second most productive offense. They proved to be just that in the first 20 minutes as freshman Dimelon Westfield scored twice with assists both times to Steven Rhyne. Both goals came on breakaway opportunities.

The Deacons outshot the Tigers 17-13. Clemson committed 24 fouls to Wake Forest's 14 and by game's end, three Deacon defenders were on the sideline with injuries.

Both teams had chances to break the tie. Just moments after the second Wake Forest goal, Kelvin Jones' header following a corner kick was cleared off the line by a Tiger defender. In the second overtime, Deacon goalkeeper William Hesmer robbed John Cooper from point blank range with a diving stop.

A standing room only crowd of 3,771 was on hand for the game. The grandstand was full to capacity and hundreds of people lined the fences on the remaining three sides of the stadium. It was the largest regular season crowd in Spry Stadium history and it happened while most students were away on Fall Break.

Wake Forest goes to 9-0-3, still undefeated on the season with a 3-0-1 record in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Clemson is now 9-1-2 and 2-1-1 in the ACC. The result keeps both teams in the race for the regular season ACC title.
