WINSTON-SALEM, NC -
The 15th-ranked Wake Forest men's soccer team edged
George Mason 1-0 on Wednesday night at Spry Stadium. Freshman defender
Kelvin Jones' header following a Matt Thompson corner kick in the 47th
minute was the difference as the Deacons extended their winning streak
to six games.
The win gives head coach Jay Vidovich 76 for his career. He needs just
one more win to tie his friend and mentor Walt Chyzowych as Wake
Forest's all-time winningest coach. Vidovich, who holds the best
winning percentage by any coach in Wake Forest history, is 76-46-10 in
his seventh season.
Senior goalkeeper Rob Vartughian needed to make just two saves to post
his fourth shutout. Jones' goal was his second of the season. The
Fredricksburg, Va., native, scored in similar fashion in a win against
South Carolina last month. It was Thompson's fourth assist of the year.
'I was pleased with the way our team keep its composure in such a close
game. That's good preparation for our remaining games,' Vidovich said.
'Give a lot of credit to George Mason tonight for really battling us for
the full 90 minutes. Our guys were certainly tested tonight.'
The Deacs and Patriots played a scoreless first half but it wasn't
without an anxious moment for the Deacons. In the ninth minute, George
Mason nearly got on the board after a corner kick with a blast off the
foot of Charlie Snee but junior Jamal Seale cleared the shot off the
line.
The game was a defensive battle as the teams combined for just 16
shots, the lowest two-team shot total of the season. Wake Forest had 11
shots, six of which were put on goal. The Patriots used two goalkeepers
on the night. Rich Gaskin played the first half, making two saves.
Mike Krupka finished the game, making three stops but giving up the
game's lone goal.
The Demon Deacons improve to 9-3-1 on the year and the Patriots fall to
8-6. Wake Forest wraps up the regular season home schedule against
Clemson on Saturday. Kickoff is 7:00 p.m. at Spry Stadium.
