CHARLOTTE, N.C.-- The 18th-ranked Wake Forest men's soccer team beat
Charlotte 3-2 in overtime Sunday afternoon at Transamerica Field. Ben
Stafford led the Deacs with a goal and an assist. After going up 2-0,
the Demon Deacons let their lead dissolve as the 49ers tied the game
with less than five minutes remaining in regulation, forcing overtime.
Wake Forest senior midfielder Ben Stafford got the Deacs on the board
early in the game when he converted a penalty kick 2:29 minutes into the
match. In the 37th minute, Jaron Barbee came off the Wake Forest bench
to score. The senior forward netted a ball from Andy Rosenband, flicked
on by Jamal Seale.
Charlotte rallied in the second half, stopping all five of Wake's shots
on goal. Juan Munoz-Airey found net at the 73:30 mark of the game to
bring the 49ers within one. With under five minutes remaining in the
match, Charlotte's C.J. Robinson buried a diving header off a pass from
Ntando Sambo into the Deacon's goal, tying the score 2-2 and sending the
game into overtime.
It didn't take long for Wake Forest to regroup in the sudden death
overtime period. Stafford found Jeremiah White five minutes into the
third frame and White canned the golden goal.
The Demon Deacons improve to 8-3-1 on the year and the 49ers fall to
6-5-2. Wake Forest will return to action next week for a pair of home
games versus George Mason on Wednesday, Oct. 18 and Clemson on Saturday,
Oct. 21. Both games kickoff at 7:00 p.m. at Spry Stadium.
