#2 Deacons Shut Down #11 South Carolina, 1-0

Oct. 11, 2002

Final Stats

Senior Adam Hakes snapped a scoreless tie with 4:13 remaining in the game to lift second-ranked Wake Forest to a 1-0 win over 11th-ranked South Carolina on Friday night at Spry Stadium.

The game, homecoming for the Demon Deacons, was a physical, tightly-played affair in front of 3,379 fans, the second largest regular season crowd in Spry Stadium history. Wake Forest had far more opportunities in the game, outshooting the Gamecocks 22-7.

Nevertheless, the score had remained unchanged from its original ovals more than 85 minutes through the contest. But Hakes' second of the season broke the deadlock. James Riley crossed a pass from the right wing into the middle of the penalty area and hit Hakes in stride. Closely marked by a South Carolina defender, Hakes got just enough on the shot to tuck it inside the far post.

The victory extended several streaks for the Demon Deacons who remain unbeaten of the season. Now, 9-0-2, Wake Forest has shutout five straight opponents for a span of 555 minutes. The last team to score against the Deacons was St. John's back on September 21. Wake Forest also won its fifth straight home game.

The Deacons will have seven days of rest before their next game. It comes against another ranked opponent, fourth-ranked Clemson. It will be the sixth nationally-ranked opponent Wake Forest has played this season. Kick off against the Tigers is set for Saturday, October 19 at 7:00 p.m. at Spry Stadium.
