Box Score
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -
Wake Forest freshman Jamie Franks scored in the 51st minute and sophomore goalkeeper Brian Edwards did the rest as the No. 11 Demon Deacons blanked Florida Atlantic, 1-0, in men's college soccer action from Spry Stadium Tuesday night. With the victory, Wake Forest improves to 6-2-0 on the season, while the Owls fall to 3-6-0.
After a first-half that featured just seven total shots, five of which were taken by the Deacons, the two teams began to open up the play after halftime.
Wake Forest, which had scored in the first 20 minutes of each of its last six matches, did not get on the board until early in the second stanza. Franks broke free behind the Florida Atlantic defense and beat goalkeeper Anders Granstad to give the Deacs a 1-0 lead at 50:27. The goal was the freshman's third of the season and marked the seventh consecutive match that Wake Forest has scored first.
Junior midfielder Ryan Solle, who was named Top Drawer Soccer National Player of the Week earlier in the day, picked up his nation-leading 10th assist. The Broadway, N.C. native has registered an assist in six consecutive matches. The 10th assist not only gives Solle 20 for his career, which is tied for sixth on the all-time assist list, but also equalled the Wake Forest single-season school record for assists. He is only the fourth player in program history to reach the 10 assist plateau in one season and Solle has accomplished the feat in just eight games.
Edwards, and the rest of the Demon Deacon defense, made the goal stand. Edwards made three saves, including a spectacular stop on a Florida Atlantic shot from point-blank range late in the second-half. The shutout is Edwards' fourth of the season and 13th of his career. The sophomore lowered his season goals against average to 0.75.
The Deacs return to ACC action Friday, Sept. 30 at No. 17 Maryland. Kickoff with the Terps is scheduled for 8 p.m.
