WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The 11th-ranked Wake Forest men's soccer team opened
its exhibition schedule with a 1-0 win against Greensboro College at
Spry Stadium on Saturday night.
The game's lone goal was scored by freshman forward Jeremiah White.
His goal came with just over two minutes before halftime. White
controlled a ball along the sideline in the midfield and proceeded to
work all the way into the box. He aimed a left-footed shot past
Greensboro goalkeeper Jeff Jones.
The Deacons dominated play for much of the contest but the Pride nearly
tied the game with about 20 minutes remaining. After a flurry of
activity in the box, sophomore Bobby Gehring made a back save to ensure
the Wake Forest victory.
Wake Forest outshot Greensboro College 14-4 in the game and applied the
defensive clamps, giving up just one shot in the second half. Senior
forward Ben Stafford led all players with four shots.
Head Coach Jay Vidovich used two newcomers in goal during the contest.
Freshman Will Hesmer played the first 45 minutes while senior transfer
Rob Vartughian finished out the game.
Vidovich was pleased with his team's performance.
"Tonight was a great opportunity to see what we're made of against some
very good competition. We had lots of good moments and we showed some
great potential," Vidovich said. "I was excited by the play of our
newcomers and our old-timers did exactly what we were looking for."
A crowd of 1,203 was on hand to watch the Deacs win their exhibition
opener. Wake Forest returns to action when the Chanticleers of Coastal
Carolina visit Spry Stadium on Thursday night for a 5:30 kickoff.
