The Wake Forest men's golf team improved its score by four strokes in the second round of the Long Cove Collegiate Invitational, good enough to move two spots in the standings into a tie for fourth place. The 54-hole tournament, featuring 15 teams, is taking place at par-71, 7,026-yard Long Cove Golf Course.
Georgia Tech, which was two strokes behind the Deacons in seventh place after Friday's first round, has vaulted into the team lead after scoring a six-under 278 on Saturday. The Yellow Jackets lead second-place Texas (+12) by five strokes. Clemson is one stroke back in third (+13), while the Deacons and Southern Cal are for fourth at 18-over par.
Wake Forest sophomore Bill Haas (Greer, S.C.) remains in contention for individual medalist honors, as he currently sits in second place with a three-under 139. Haas led the field with a first-round 67, but turned in a one-over 72 on Saturday to fall two strokes behind David Oh of USC (68-69).
Deacon junior Brent Wanner (Chatham, Mass.) remains in the top 10 on the leaderboard, as he is tied for 10th with a two-over 144. Wanner has turned in a pair of 72s in the first two rounds.
The remainder of the Deacon lineup made up a little ground in the second round, as junior Chris Yoder (Ashland, Ohio) is tied for 45th with a 10-over 152 (78-74) and senior Jay Morgan (Choctaw, Okla.) is in 58th with a 13-over 155 (78-77). Junior Chad Wilfong (Thomasville, N.C.) improved by nine strokes in the second round, and is also tied for 58th (82-73).
The final round of the Long Cove Collegiate Invitational takes place Sunday. It is the final tournament of the fall for the Demon Deacons.
