Deacons In Fifth Place In Strong Field At Isleworth Invitational

Oct. 25, 2004

WINDERMERE, FL -- Paced by junior Kyle Reifers' 4-under par 68, Wake Forest shot 1-under par as a team in the second round of the Isleworth Invitational and is in fifth place among some of the nation's golf teams heading into Tuesday's final round.

The 54-hole tournament concludes with 18 holes on Tuesday at the Isleworth Country Club, home to PGA Tour stars Tiger Woods, Mark O'Meara, John Cook and others. The course was designed by Wake Forest graduate Arnold Palmer.

After shooting a cumulative 13-over 301 in Monday's morning round, the 24th-ranked Demon Deacons rallied in the afternoon to take hold of fifth place. There are nine nationally-ranked teams in the field of 16 squads. Wake Forest trails tournament leader Georgia by 11 strokes, second-place Georgia Tech by nine strokes, Oklahoma State by six strokes and fourth-place Kentucky by one stroke.

Deacon coach Jerry Haas is using a lineup of three freshmen (Chris McCartin, Dustin Groves and Webb Simpson), one sophomore (Sean Moore) and one junior (Reifers).

Reifers is in fifth place overall after two under-par rounds of 71 and 68 (139 total) on Monday. He is followed by three Deacon freshmen - McCartin shot a 2-over 146, Simpson a 8-over 152 and Groves a 9-over 153. Moore, the defending ACC individual champion, fired an 11-over 155.

Reifers is just two shots behind the leaders as three players are tied for first with a 5-under 137 - Georgia Tech's Roberto Castro, Oklahoma State's Pablo Martin and Florida's Matt Every. Georgia Chris Kirk is in fourth place at 4-under 138.
