The Wake Forest men's golf team turned in a final round 303 to drop to an eighth-place finish at the Bank of Tennessee/The Ridges Intercollegiate Golf Tournament, the opening event of the season for the 2001-02 Demon Deacons. Sitting in third place
heading into Sunday's final round, the Deacons collectively turned in a 15-over par to finish the 54-hole event with a three-over 867. TCU won the
tournament, scorching the 15-team field with a 23-under 841 for the event. Southern California held on to second place with a 13-under 851.
Wake Forest finished ahead of Clemson (ninth, +7) and North Carolina (13th, +24), the only other ACC teams competing in the event.
Deacon sophomore Bill Haas (Greer, SC) finished tied for third place with a nine-under 207 on the 54 holes. He dropped one spot in the
standings after posting an even par 72 on Sunday. It is the third career top three finish and sixth career top 10 finish for Haas, a sophomore who
was the ACC Rookie of the Year last season.
Junior Chad Wilfong (Thomasville, NC) placed 22nd with a one-over 217 (70-71-76), while junior Buck Williams (Raleigh, NC) dropped to a
37th-place finish after carding a 78 on Sunday. He finished with a six-over 220 for the tournament (72-70-78).
Juniors Brent Wanner (Chatham, MA) and Cortland Lowe (Augusta, GA) both finished in 61st with a 12-over 228. Wanner turned in rounds of
75-76-77 while Lowe, competing as an individual, posted a 72-81-75.
Senior Jay Morgan (Choctaw, OK) was disqualified for signing an incorrect scorecard.
The Deacons return to action Sept. 28-30, when they travel to Columbus, Ohio to compete in the NCAA Preview. The tournament will take
place at Ohio State's Scarlett Course, site of the 2002 NCAA Championships.
