NASHVILLE, TN - Wake Forest and junior Kyle Reifers saved their best performances of the year until today as the Demon Deacons and Reifers are in first place at the NCAA East Men's Golf Regional after 18 holes.
Reifers matched a career-low with a 6-under par 65 today and the Demon Deacons shot a season-best 13-under par 271. Reifers leads the individual race and Wake Forest leads the 27-team race with 36 holes remaining.
The top 10 teams from the East Regional advance to the NCAA Championships June 1-4 near Baltimore. Six teams were still on the course when darkness suspended play today. The second round will be completed on Friday, followed by the final round on Saturday at the par 71, 6,864-yard Golf Club of Tennessee.
Wake Forest will enter the second round three strokes in front of North Carolina and four strokes in front of SEC power Georgia. The Demon Deacons are one of just eight teams under par. Wake Forest has three NCAA championships to its credit, but has never won an NCAA regional.
Reifers holds a one stroke lead over three players after matching his career-best with a 65 today. The Deacon junior had six birdies and no bogies on the day.
Deacon sophomore Sean Moore turned in one of his top career performances today as well, shooting a 4-under 67 and he is tied for fifth place. Freshman Chris McCartin is tied for 11th after firing a 3-under 68. Webb Simpson, the ACC Freshman of the Year, is tied for 35th place at even par. Junior Doug Manchester shot a 1-over 72 today.
