WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.--The Wake Forest men's golf team has been selected to
participate in the 2000 NCAA Men's Golf East Regional Championship, held
May 18-20 at the Glenmaura National Golf Club in Moosic, Pa. Temple
University will be the host school for the event.
The Demon Deacons were one of 27 teams selected to participate in the East
Regional, in addition to six individual golfers. An additional 54 teams and
12 individuals will compete in the Central and West Regionals, also held
May 18-20. Thirty teams and six individuals will advance from the three
regionals to the NCAA Championship, held May 31-June 1 at the Grand
National Golf Course in Auburn, Ala. At least eight teams will advance
from each region; a specific breakdown of how many teams will advance from
each region will be announced on Wednesday, May 10, at 6:00 pm EST at the
NCAA website at www.ncaa.org.
Playing primarily with freshmen and sophomores in the lineup, the Demon
Deacons have won two tournaments in 1999-2000 - the Cavalier Classic in the
fall and The Intercollegiate at MacGregor Downs in the spring. Freshman
Brent Wanner (73.0 stroke average) and sophomore Jay Morgan (73.3) have
been the Deacs' top performers.
Currently ranked 36th in the Mastercard rankings and 38th in the
Golfweek/Sagarin ratings, Wake Forest has received a team bid to the NCAAs
in 33 of the last 34 years. The Deacs missed out on a team bid for the
first time since 1967 last spring, but they were represented well in the
event by an individual (senior Michael Capone), who advanced to the NCAA
finals. Since the NCAA began the regional playoff format in 1989, the
Deacs have advanced from the regionals to the finals seven times - every
season except 1989, 90, 98 and 99. Wake Forest owns three NCAA titles
(1974, 75, `86) and was the NCAA runner-up four times, most recently in
1997.
