Rains Suspends Play In Second Round Of ACC Championship

April 22, 2006

NEW LONDON, N.C. - Two separate rain delays interrupted the second round of the ACC Men's Golf Championship here Saturday with Wake Forest tied for seventh place.

The second round will be completed Sunday morning, followed by the third and final round at the par 72, 7102-yard Old North State Club. The Demon Deacons were a cumulative 2-under par on the day, moving up from ninth place to a tie for seventh, when play was suspended.

The rain interrupted a 4-under par round by Deacon senior Kyle Reifers, who has three holes remaining in the second round and is tied for ninth place overall. Sophomore Webb Simpson was at 1-under par for the day and has just one hole remaining. Sophomore Chris McCartin, who was even par for the day and even par for the tournament, has four holes to play in his second round. Senior Doug Manchester is 3-over with two holes left in his second round. Junior Sean Moore, who shot a 3-over 75, was the only Deacon to complete his round.

Reifers is 4-under par for the tournament, putting him just three strokes off the pace. Clemson's David May leads all individuals at 7-under.  Four golfers are tied for second place at 6-under. McCartin (even par for the tournament) is tied for 21st place and Simpson (+1) is tied for 28th.

Clemson (-20 for the tournament), Georgia Tech (-19) and North Carolina (-17) are making it a three-team race for the team championship. Florida State (-5) and Maryland (-5) are tied for fourth place, NC State (-3) is in sixth, and Wake Forest (+2) and Virginia Tech (+2) are tied for seventh.

Eleven teams are competing for the ACC crown. Miami does not participate in men's golf.

Wake Forest has won more ACC championships (18) than any other school. The Deacons have not won a team title since 1989 but had finished in the top four for four consecutive years until taking sixth place last season.
