Deacons In Ninth Place After ACC Championship First Round

April 21, 2006

NEW LONDON, N.C. - Wake Forest senior Kyle Reifers and sophomore Chris McCartin scrapped their way to solid rounds of even par, but the Demon Deacons are in ninth place after the first round of the ACC Championship at the Old North State Golf Club here Friday.

The Deacons have two days and 36 holes remaining to get back in contention for the 19th ACC title in school history.

Wake Forest shot a cumulative 4-over par 292 today at the par 72, 7,102-yard layout. The Deacons are 16 strokes off the pace set by Georgia Tech (276). North Carolina (278) is in second place, two strokes back, and Maryland (284) and NC State (284) are tied for third, eight strokes out.

Eleven teams are competing for the ACC crown. Miami does not participate in men's golf.

Georgia Tech's Michael Barbosa shot a blistering 7-under 65 to take the lead in the race for individual honors. Florida State's Mathew Savage (-5) is in second place and four golfers are tied for third at 4-under.

Wake's Reifers and McCartin are tied for 21st place at even par. Both players had three birdies and three bogies on the day.  Deacon senior Doug Manchester and sophomore Webb Simpson are tied for 35th place after shooting 2-over 74. Junior Sean Moore shot a 5-over 77.

The Deacons have reason to be optimistic about the remaining two rounds. While Moore struggled to a 77, he won the event in 2004 as a freshman at the Old North State Club. Simpson entered the ACC Championship having finished second in his previous two events.

The teams will play 18 holes Saturday and conclude with the final 18 holes Sunday.
