UWHARRIE POINT, NC - On a tightly-bunched scoreboard, Wake Forest is tied for seventh place but just 10 strokes off the pace after Friday's first round of the ACC Men's Golf Championship.
In extremely windy conditions at the par 72 Old North State Golf Club, Duke shot a 4-over 292 to lead Georgia Tech by one stroke. Florida State (+9), NC State (+11), Virginia (+11), Clemson (+12), Wake Forest (+14) and Maryland (+14) are all within striking distance. Virginia Tech (+20) and North Carolina (+26) are in ninth and 10th place, respectively.
Only five of the 50 golfers in the tournament shot under par on the 7,102-yard layout with winds gusting to 30 miles per hour.
Wake Forest, which owns more ACC championships (18) than any other team, is looking for its first ACC title since 1989.
Junior Doug Manchester shot a 2-over 74 to lead the Demon Deacons and to tie for 12th in the individual race. Freshman Webb Simpson is tied for 19th place after a 3-over 75. Junior Kyle Reifers shot a 4-over 76 to tie for 23rd place. Freshman Chris McCartin is tied for 26th after a 5-over 77. Defending ACC individual champion, Deacon sophomore Sean Moore, struggled to an 81 today.
The windy conditions didn't bother Duke's Ryan Blaum, who shot a 4-under 68 and leads the individual race by two strokes. Brad Tilley of Virginia is in second place after firing a 2-under 70.
