AUGUSTA, GA -- On a day in which just one player in the tournament field shot under par and wind blew hard enough to postpone the second 18 holes, Wake Forest is tied for 13th out of 18 teams at the Augusta State Invitational.
The sixth-ranked Demon Deacons shot a combined 30-over par 330 at the par 72, 7,231-yard Forest Hills Golf Club. While Wake Forest trails 12 teams, it is just 15 shots behind tournament leader East Tennessee State (15-over par). Host Augusta State is just one shot back in second place and Georgia Southern is two shots off the pace in third place.
The 18-team field was scheduled to play 36 holes today, but dangerous wind conditions caused tournament officials to postpone the second round until Sunday morning. Teams will conclude the 54-hole event with 18 more holes Sunday afternoon.
Deacon juniors Kyle Reifers and Doug Manchester paced Wake Forest with opening-round 78s (6-over par). The duo is tied for 22nd place and is eight shots behind tournament leader Rhys Davies of East Tennessee State, who was the only player to shoot under par (2-under 70). Augusta State's Scott Jamieson and Georgia's Chris Kirk are tied for second place after shooting even par 72.
Other Wake Forest scorers were freshmen Dustin Groves and Chris McCartin, who both shot a 9-over par 81. Alex Yates shot a 12-over 84.
