AWANDAW, S.C. - Junior Kyle Reifers and freshman Webb Simpson both shot opening rounds of 71 to tie for eighth place in the individual race at the Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate here Monday.
Reifers and Simpson paced sixth-ranked Wake Forest, which in seventh place out of 15 top-notch teams. One day after the start of the tournament was postponed because of poor weather, the Demon Deacons shot a collective 294 (6-over par).
Reifers and Simpson are five shots behind the co-leaders - Georgia Tech's Chan Song and Augusta's Scott Jamieson, who both fired a 66 today. Other Deacon scorers were junior Doug Manchester, who shot a 1-over 73; sophomore Sean Moore shot a 7-over 79; and Alex Yates struggled to a 13-over 85.
Wake Forest is 18 strokes behind tournament leader Augusta, which fired a 12-under 276 at the Bulls Bay Golf Club. Augusta is the only team under par and leads second-place South Carolina and Auburn by 12 strokes.
Part of the second round was also completed today, although results were not available at press time. The second round will be completed Tuesday morning, followed by the final 18 holes Tuesday afternoon.
