Wake Forest Increases Lead To 10 Strokes At The Hootie

March 27, 2006

AWANDAW, SC -  Sophomore Webb Simpson matched a career-low with a 6-under 65 and Wake Forest increased its overall lead to 10 strokes after two rounds of the Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate here Monday. The final 18 holes are scheduled for Tuesday at the par 71, 7,229-yard Bulls Bay Golf Club.

The 19th-ranked Demon Deacons, looking for their second win of the 2005-06 season, are 10 strokes in front of second-place South Carolina after shooting a cumulative 7-under 277 today. Wake Forest is 16-under through 36 holes. Augusta State is in third place, 13 strokes behind the Deacons, and UCF is in fourth, 19 strokes back.

Simpson enjoyed one of his best career rounds. He had six birdies, no bogies and shot a sizzling 5-under 30 on the back nine today.  He is 9-under par for the tournament, but just one stroke in front of Augusta State's Jamie Miller. Deacon senior Doug Manchester, eyeing his first career top-10 finish, is in fourth place overall. He shot an even-par 67 today and is 4-under through 36 holes.

Junior Sean Moore bounced back from an opening-round 77 to fire a 4-under 67 today, moving up to a tie for 18th place overall. Senior Kyle Reifers is 3-over for the tournament and tied for 26th.  Sophomore Chris McCartin, who shot a 3-over 74 today, is tied with Reifers for 26th place.

Even if Wake Forest shoots just even par on Tuesday, that would give the Deacons the 13th-lowest 54-hole score in Wake Forest history.  The Deacons, who won the Mattaponi Springs Shootout in the fall, are looking to win two tournaments in the same season for the first time since 2002-03.
