Deacons Drop To 16th At Hall Of Fame Invitational

HOUSTON, Texas - Fourteenth-ranked Wake Forest improved by four shots but fell to 16th place after 36 holes of the Texas/GCAA Hall of Fame Invitational here Saturday.

 

The Demon Deacons shot a cumulative 24-over 312 today, dropping from 15th to 16th place in the 17-team, 54-hole event at the par 72 Redstone Golf Club. Wake Forest is 12 shots out of finishing in the top 10.

 

Oklahoma State holds a seven-stroke lead in the race for the team title. The Cowboys are in front of Texas and East Tennessee State, which are tied for second place. Oklahoma is 13 strokes back in fourth place.

 

Wake Forest is not at full strength this week. Junior Sean Moore did not play Friday because of an illness. He returned to action today, but struggled to an 8-over par 80. The Deacons are also without sophomore Webb Simpson, who used a sponsor's exemption to play in the PGA Tour's Bay Hill Classic this week.

 

Senior Kyle Reifers, who shot a 6-over 78 today, leads the Deacons through 36 holes. Reifers is at 10-over for the tournament and tied for 34th place. Sophomore Chris McCartin, who shot a 5-over 77 today, is at 12-over through 36 holes and tied for 49th place.  Senior Doug Manchester also shot a 77 today and he is at 15-over par for the tournament.  Freshman Marc Gladson is 19-over for the tournament after shooting an 84 today.

 

Oklahoma's Anthony Kim is running away with the individual race. He fired a 3-under 69 today to go 8-under for the tournament. Kim is eight strokes in front of Oklahoma State's Jonathan Moore and Texas' Jhonnaton Vegas.

 

The 17 teams are playing will play the final 18 holes on Sunday.
