Deacons In The Hunt At Southern Highlands Collegiate

March 12, 2005

LAS VEGAS - Junior Kyle Reifers fired a 5-under par 67 as Wake Forest mounted a charge in the second round of the Southern Highland Collegiate Championship.

The Demon Deacons, ranked fifth nationally by GolfWeek, shot a collective 5-under par 283 to move into a tie for fifth place at the par 72, 7,510-yard layout at the Highlands Golf Club. The final 18 holes will be played on Sunday.

Wake Forest is just five shots behind tournament leader and host UNLV. Oklahoma State is in second place, one stroke back, followed by Georgia and Arizona State. The Demon Deacons are tied for fifth place with fellow ACC member Georgia Tech.

The Deacons moved up to the fifth-place tie after being tied for ninth place after the first round.

Reifers shared the best individual round of the day with his 67 after an up-and-down round. He had one eagle, five birdies, two bogeys and two double-bogeys today. Coupled with his first round 76, Reifers is in a logjam in seventh place with a 36-hole total of 1-under par.

South Carolina's Mark Anderson is in first place with a two-day 138 (6-under).

Deacon junior Doug Manchester, who shot a 72-74--146, and freshman Webb Simpson, who shot 76-70--146, are two of several golfers tied for 22nd place. Freshman Chris McCartin (76-72--148) and sophomore Sean Moore (73-75--148) are tied for 35th place. Wake Forest, playing in its second tournament of the spring, finished second in the first event of 2005 at the SunTrust Invitational in Gainesville, FL.
