LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Wake Forest, one of 13 nationally-ranked teams in the 15-team field at the Southern Highlands Collegiate, is in 13th place after one round of the 54-hole event at the par 72, 7,510-yard Southern Highlands Golf Club.
The 14th-ranked Demon Deacons, despite being near the bottom of the standings, are just 19 strokes out of the lead.
Defending NCAA champion and No. 1-ranked Georgia and tournament host UNLV are tied for the team lead at 7-over par. The Deacons are at 26-over par after shooting a cumulative 314 today. Georgia Tech is in third place, two strokes off the pace at 9-over, and Oklahoma State is in fourth place at 11-over par.
Wake Forest senior Kyle Reifers paced the Deacons today with a 4-over par 76. He is tied for 21st place overall. Junior Sean Moore and Webb Simpson are tied for 42nd place after shooting a 6-over 78 today. Senior Doug Manchester shot a 10-over 82 and sophomore Chad Wilcox turned in an 11-over 83.
Reifers is seven shots out of the lead held by UCLA's Daniel Im, who shot a 3-under 69 today. The only other golfer under par was UNLV's C.J. Gatton, who fired a 1-under 71.
The teams will play 18 holes on Saturday and conclude with 18 holes on Sunday.
The stellar field includes No. 1-ranked and defending NCAA champion Georgia, No. 2 Georgia Tech, No. 3 Florida, No. 4 Oklahoma State, No. 5 UCLA, No.8 Duke, No. 9 Arizona State and No. 10 and tournament host UNLV. The tournament field also includes No. 19 Texas A&M, No. 21 Clemson, No. 23 (tied) Arizona, No. 23 (tied) New Mexico, Texas and Washington.
