Deacon Golfers Open The Spring Season This Weekend

Feb. 1, 2005

The sixth-ranked Wake Forest men's golf team opens its spring season this weekend at the SunTrust Gator Invitational in Gainesville, FL.

Fifteen teams will play 36 holes Saturday and 18 holes Sunday at the par 70 University Golf Club (6,701 yards). The field includes seven nationally-ranked teams including Florida, Kentucky and Tennessee out of the Southeastern Conference as well as Purdue, Georgia Southern and Georgia State.

Three freshmen, one sophomore and one junior will represent Wake Forest, which finished the fall on a high note with a second-place finish at the Carpet Collegiate Classic. Freshman Webb Simpson, who had the team's lowest stroke average (71.92) in the fall, and junior Kyle Reifers, who had three top-20 finishes in the fall, lead the Deacons. Also representing the Deacons this weekend will be 2004 ACC champion Sean Moore and freshmen Chris McCartin and Dustin Groves.
