Men's Golf Goes 0-2 at Collegiate Matchplay Championship

Deacon freshmen Moore, Wilcox post only WFU victories against Oklahoma State, UCLA

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Wake Forest men's golf team went 0-2 at the Collegiate Matchplay Championship, taking place at Barefoot Resort. Competing in a 16-team double-elimination bracket, the 10th-seeded Deacs lost their first round match on Friday to seventh-seed Oklahoma State, 3-1-1. In a second-round match versus second-seeded UCLA, the Deacs fell by the same score to the Bruins.

The only Deacon victory against Oklahoma State came from freshman Chad Wilcox, who defeated OSU's Alex Noren, one-up. Deacon Bill Haas finished all-sqaure with OSU's Zack Robinson, halving that match. Freshman Sean Moore lost a close one to Tyler Leon, 2 and 1. Cowboy Chris Clarke topped Deac sophomore Kyle Reifers, 4 and 3 and Dayton Rose defeated WFU sophomore Barr Blanton, 6 and 5.
 

 

Versus UCLA, another Deacon rookie stepped up for the lone victory. Moore topped Roy Moon, 5 and 3. Haas once again halved his match, finishing all square with Steve Conway. Reifers fell to UCLA's John Merrick, 2 and 1, while Wilcox lost to John Poucher, 4 and 2. Deacon junior Doug Manchester entered the lineup versus UCLA in place of Blanton, and lost to Travis Johnson, 3 and 2.

The Collegiate Matchplay Championship marks the end of the fall season for the Deacon golfers. WFU returns to action Feb. 2, 2004 at the PING Arizona Intercollegiate in Tuscon.
