After entering the final round in a tie for first place, the WFU men・s golf team could not match
its four sub-par second round scores, carding a a 12-over 296 on Tuesday to finish sixth at the Jerry Pate National
Intercollegiate. The tournament took place Old Overton Club・s 6,958-yard, par 71 course.
Oklahoma State, who was tied with Wake Forest going into the final 18, captured a four-stroke victory after an 11-under
273 on Tuesday. The Cowboys finished 34-under for the tournament (818). Georgia was second (822), followed by
UNLV (825), Clemson (826), Augusta State (838) and WFU (841). The Deacs・ 11-under par score was their best
tournament team score since a -25 at last spring・s Cleveland Golf/Augusta State Invitational.
Wake Forest senior
Bill Haas captured his seventh career collegiate title and second of the season, taking medalist honors
with an 18-under 195. It is a new career low for Haas, and the lowest by a Deacon golfer since Chris Kite recorded a
21-under 195 (on a par 72 course) at the 1986 Chris Schenkel Intercollegiate.
Haas, who recorded rounds of 63-66-66, finished five strokes ahead of second-place competitor Lars Brovold of host
Alabama. Haas also set a new WFU school record with his fifth consecutive round in the 60s. Including a pair of 69s in
his last tournament, Haas has carded 69-69-63-66-66 over his last five rounds.
Sophomore Kyle Reifers recorded a 14th-place finish with a new career low 207 (-6). After a 68-66 on Monday,
Reifers turned in a two-over 73 in the final round.
Freshman Sean Moore tied for 31st, his best finish of the season thus far. Moore turned in a 74 in the final round to go
with earlier scores of 72-68 for a total of one-over 214.
Wake Forest・s other two freshmen in the lineup struggled in the final round. Chad Wilcox, after a 72-70 on Monday,
wrapped up with an 84 to tie for 56th at 13-over 226. Matt McLean, playing in his first collegiate event, placed 60th with
a 25-over 238 (77-78-83).
After playing four tournaments in the first month of the 2003-04 season, the Deacs now have a three-week break. Next
up is the Collegiate Matchplay Championship, held at Barefoot Resort in Myrtle Beach, S.C., Nov. 7-9.
