Deacon Golfers Tied for Third at Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. - The 13th-ranked Wake Forest men's golf team is in third place after the first round of the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate at The Ridges in Johnson City, Tenn. The Deacons shot a collective two-under par 286 in Friday's first round. Host East Tennessee State leads the field with a six-under 282 while Kentucky is second at five-under 283.

Wake Forest was led by Webb Simpson and Brendan Gielow with matching two-under par 70 scores on Friday. Freshman Chris Cannon and senior Chris McCartin were each at one-over 73 while Dustin Groves as at four-over 76.

Kentucky's Ben Fuqua is the individual leader with a five-under 67 on Friday. Gielow and Simpson are tied for sixth place after the first round. Cannon and McCartin are tied for 32nd place.

The strong field of 15 teams includes eight squads that competed in last year's NCAA Championship and three teams that won conference titles in 2007.
