Wake Forest In Third After Opening Day Of Carpet Capital Classic

DALTON, Ga. -- Sophomore JAY MORGAN shot a career-low 69 as the Wake Forest men's golf team stands in third place after the first round of the Carpet Capital Classic golf tournament. The event is being played on the par-72, 6906-yard course at The Farm Golf Club.

The Demon Deacons, who are coming off their first team title in three years, carded a first-round team score of 286, or 2-under par. One of only three teams in the 15-team field not ranked in the Mastercard Top 25, Wake Forest is just seven shots behind team leader and sixth-ranked Georgia Tech and four shots behind No. 1 Clemson.

Morgan (-3), who won his first career individual title at the Cavalier Classic two weeks ago, currently stands tied for fifth place in the individual standings. He is just one shot behind the four players who stand tied for first place at 4-under. Freshman BUCK WILLIAMS fired a 71 and is tied for 11th place at 1-under, while freshman BRENT WANNER and redshirt freshman CORTLAND LOWE both shot 73s and are tied for 29th place. Sophomore BART DeLUCA rounds out the Deacon field in 62nd place after carding a 76.

Second round action continues on Saturday, with the final 18 holes played on Sunday.
