Wake Forest junior Brent Wanner carded an even-par 71 on Sunday to capture individual medalist honors at The Ping-Golfweek Preview
Invitational at Ohio State University's Scarlet Course. Wanner, of Chatham, Mass., finished the tournament with a three-under 210 (69-70-71), one stroke ahead of
teammate Bill Haas (Greer, S.C.). Haas, a sophomore who turned in a one-under 70 in the final round, finished in a three-way tie for second at two-under 211
(70-71-70) with D.J. Trahan of Clemson and Doug Wade of Ohio State.
Wanner's victory was his second career title, as he won medalist honors at the Duke Classic last fall.
As a team, Wake Forest finished in second place, just one stroke back of champion Clemson. The Demon Deacons turned in a two-under 282 - their lowest score of
the tournament - in Sunday's final round. The Tigers, which the led the three-day, 54-hole tournament wire-to-wire, shot a seven-over 291 on Sunday and had to birdie
the final hole to win the event with a 10-over 862. WFU finished with an 11-over 863, one stroke ahead of third-place Texas.
Wake Forest junior Chad Wilfong (Thomasville, N.C.) fired a career-low 69 on Sunday to vault from 48th place to a top 20 finish, tying for 19th with a three-day total of
six-over 219 (76-74-69). Other Deacon competitors included senior Jay Morgan (Choctaw, Okla.), who finished 43rd with an 11-over 224 (75-77-72) and junior
Cortland Lowe (Augusta, Ga.), who finished 49th, one stroke back of Morgan with a 225 (75-77-73).
OSU's Scarlet Course will serve as host of the this year's NCAA Men's Golf Championships, to be contested May 29 - June 1, 2002.
The Wake Forest men's golf team returns to action October 5-7 at the Carpet Capital Collegiate in Rocky Face, Ga.
Notable: Bill Haas' brother, Jay Haas, Jr., also competed in The Preview as a member of the Augusta State golf team, and finished 37th with a 10-over 223.
The Haas brothers are the sons of former WFU golfer Jay Haas as well as nephews of current Wake Forest coach Jerry Haas. This weekend's tournament
marked the first time the brothers competed in the same collegiate event.
