Men's Golf Ties for Seventh at Carpet Capital Collegiate

Rocky Face, Ga. - The Wake Forest men's golf team finished tied for seventh in its inaugural tournament of the season, the Carpet Capital Collegiate which was contested at The Farm Golf Course in Rocky Face, Ga.

Alabama won the team competition after tying with South Carolina at five-over 869. The Crimson Tide won on the first playoff hole.

The 23rd-ranked Demon Deacons fired a six-over 294 in Sunday's final round to finish in a tie for seventh with Tennessee at 883.

Georgia Tech's Chesson Hadley claimed medalist honors with an eight-under 208.

Wake Forest was led by sophomore Brendan Gielow who finished at even-par 216 after a closing round of 73. Gielow tied for 10th in the field which included 10 teams ranked in the preseason top 25.

Dustin Groves finished with a final round of two-under 70 to conclude the 54-hole tournament at two-over 218. Groves' 70 was the lowest round of the tournament by a Deacon golfer.

Chris McCartin tied for 28th overall at five-over 221. He shot a 74 in Sunday's final round.

Travis Wadkins finished at 12-over 228 after a final round 77 on Sunday. Preston Yates shot his best round of the weekend, a 79, on Sunday. He finished at 241.

The Deacons will return to action for the VCU Shootout Oct. 1-2 at the Hermitage Golf Course.
