Wake Forest Tied For Tied For Ninth Place After First Round of NCAA Championships

OWINGS MILL, MD. - The Wake Forest men's golf team is in a tie for ninth place, after shooting 7-over par in the first round of the NCAA Championships, Wednesday afternoon at Caves Valley Golf Course. The Demon Deacons, who are tied with SMU, sit 14 strokes behind the leader, Georgia.

In the 30-team field, Tennessee is in second place at 1-under, while Arizona is in third place at 2-over par. The Demon Deacons are one stroke ahead of both Georgia Tech and Duke, the only other ACC teams participating in the championship.

Freshman Webb Simpson leads the Deacs at 2-under par after shooting a 68 on the day. Currently tied for 11th place, Simpson is just three strokes behind the leader, Augusta State's Major Manning.

Deacon sophomore Sean Moore sits two strokes behind Simpson and is tied for 14th place after shooting 1-under, while junior Doug Manchester is one of 19 players to close out the day at 1-over.

Wake Forest will open the second round of the tournament tomorrow at 7 a.m. After tomorrow, only the top 15 teams will advance.
