OPELIKA, Ala. -- The Wake Forest men's golf team completed the second day
of play at the 2000 NCAA Championships at the Grand National Golf Club in
Opelika, Alabama, and the Demon Deacons stand in a tie with Georgia for
15th place out of 30 teams.
Since only 15 teams can make the 36-hole cut, however, the Deacs and the
Bulldogs will compete in a sudden-death playoff tomorrow morning for the
15th and final team spot. The two squads will begin on the 18th hole at
8:15 am Eastern time, and the low four scores from each team will be
counted. If there is a tie, the hole will be repeated until there is a
winner.
Also, nine individuals not on the 15 teams making the cut will also
advance. If Wake Forest wins the team playoff, five players at even-par
144 will compete in a playoff for the final three spots. If Georgia wins
the team playoff, seven players - including Deacons JAY MORGAN and BRENT
WANNER - will compete for those three slots. Due to the playoffs, the
third round will not start until approximately 10:15 am Eastern.
WFU recorded a second-round team score of 290, or 2-over par, in second
round, bettering their first-round score by two strokes. With a 36-hole
total of 582, or 6-over, the Deacs are 25 stroked behind team leader
Oklahoma State (-19). The Cowboys shot a 12-under 276 today to grab a
one-stroke lead over Texas (-18). Two ACC teams hold the third and fourth
spots on the leaderboard, with Georgia Tech at 14-under and North Carolina
at 6-under. Kent rounds out the top five at 5-under.
Morgan and Wanner both shot 1-under 71's today to stand in a tie for 28th
place at even par after two rounds. The duo is 11 strokes behind the
individual co-leaders, Texas' David Gossett and Oklahoma State's Charles
Howell (-11). Freshman CHAD WILFONG recorded a 75 today and is tied for
72nd place at 3-over. Freshman BUCK WILLIAMS tallied a 76 and is tied for
111th at 6-over, while rookie CHRIS YODER recorded a 73 and is tied for
120th at 7-over.
