MOOSIC, Pa. - Freshman Brent Wanner shot a four-under par 67 in the final round today to lead the Wake Forest men's golf team to an 11th-place finish in the NCAA East Regional at the Glenmaura National Golf Club in Moosic (Pa.). More importantly, by finishing in the top 11, the Deacons advance to the May 31-June 3 NCAA Championship in Auburn (Ala.).

Wanner's 67 today was tops among all individuals. He finished seventh overall in the individual race with a 54-hole score of 217 (4-over).

Wake Forest finished the three-day event with a team score of 896, including a 10-over 284 today. The Deacons edged outh 12th-place South Carolina (898), Tennessee (900) and ACC teams Duke (901) and NC State (901) for the all-important final spot in the NCAA championship.

Clemson (871) cruised to the team title, beating second place North Florida (883) by 12 strokes. Georgia Tech (884) finished in third, followed by first-round leader East Tennessee State (888), Georgia (889) and Georgia State (889). Other NCAA Championship qualifiers include Mississippi State, Auburn, North Carolina and Virginia.

Georgia's Michael Morrison shot a three-day 212 (1-under) to take individual medalist honors. He beat Virginia's James Driscoll by one stroke and North Carolina's Max Harris by two strokes.

For Wake Forest, sophomore Jay Morgan shot a 73 and finished 43rd overall, Chris Yoder and Buck Williams each recorded 77's and Chad Wilfong had a 78.

Wake Forest won the NCAA title in 1986.
