ROSWELL, Ga. - The Wake Forest men's golf team has its work cut out for it over the next two days, as it turned in an 11-over 299 on Thursday to place itself in a tie for sixth place after one round of the NCAA East Regional. The three-day, 54-hole tournament, featuring 27 teams, is taking place at the par 72, 7,054-yard Settindown Creek.

The top 10 teams, as well as the top two individuals on non-qualifying teams from the East Regional will advance to the 2002 NCAA Championships at Ohio State University's Scarlet Course May 29-June 1.

On a day in which just one team, Clemson, finished under par (-2), fourth-seeded Wake Forest was one of six teams to finish 11-over. The Deacs are tied with Auburn, Augusta State, Furman, Georgia Southern and North Florida in sixth place.

Host Georgia Tech is second behind the Tigers at three-over 291. Tennessee is third with a six-over 294, while North Carolina and Penn State tied for fifth with a 295.

Deacon junior Brent Wanner turned in Wake's best score of the day, carding a one-over 73 after bogeying the 18th hole. He is currently tied for 21st. Sophomore Bill Haas and junior Chris Yoder are tied for 31st after each finishing with a two-over 74. Yoder was five-over at the turn, but shot a 33 on the back nine to finish at two-over for the day.

Senior Jay Morgan and junior Chad Wilfong are tied for 91st after both finishing with a six-over 78.

"This is a very tough course," said WFU head coach Jerry Haas. "I felt like we were ready, but we just didn't play up to our capabilities today. But these are great kids, and they'll fight to the end. We certainly don't want this to be our last two rounds of the season."

The second round of the NCAA East Regional takes place Saturday. The Demon Deacons will tee off from hole No. 1 beginning at 7:30 a.m.
