NEW LONDON, N.C. - Wake Forest senior Kyle Reifers shot 9-under par over the final 36 holes to come within one stroke of tying for individual honors and the Demon Deacons finished fifth in the team race for the ACC Championship here Sunday.

North Carolina and Georgia Tech were declared co-champions when the two teams remained tied after two playoff holes. The Tar Heels and Yellow Jackets both finished regulation play 31-under par (833) at the par 72, 7,102-yard Old North State Club.

Georgia Tech's Cameron Tringale shot 65-69-72--206 (-10) to take individual medalist honors. Tringale had to hold off a fast-charging Reifers to win the crown. Reifers opened the tournament with an even par 72, then fired off rounds of 67 (-5) and 68 (-4) to finish alone in second place.

For Reifers, his performance capped a brilliant ACC career in which he finished second, 10^th, 17^th and 29^th in four ACC Tournament appearances.

Clemson's Brian Duncan (-8) and North Carolina's Robert Riesen (-8) tied for third place.

The Demon Deacons were in ninth place after the first round and in seventh place after round two before finishing fifth - one place better than last year's performance.

Clemson (-24) finished seven strokes back in third place, followed by NC State (-11). Wake Forest (-4) and Florida State (-1) were the only other teams to finish under par.

Reifers' second-place finish was Wake's best in the ACC Championship since then-freshman Sean Moore finished first in 2004.

Deacon sophomore Chris McCartin turned in one of his best career performances. He shot a 72-69-70--211 (-5) to finish in a three-way tie for ninth place. Sophomore Webb Simpson (+1) finished tied for 28^th. Senior Doug Manchester (+10) tied for 45^th and Moore (+12) tied for 47^th.

Up next for Wake Forest is the NCAA regionals, which will be held May 18-20. The Deacons could be sent to any of three regional sites. The NCAA Championship is set for May 31-June 3 in Sunriver, OR.
