NEW LONDON, N.C. -
Wake Forest freshman Sean Moore birdied the 18th hole to edge Jack Ferguson of Clemson to capture the 2004 ACC Individual Medalist honors at the ACC Men's Golf Championship. The Demon Deacons fired a 12-under round of 276 to earn second place for the second consecutive season. The 51st annual tournament took place at Old North State Club at Uwharrie Point.
Moore -- the first Deac to win the ACC Individual Title since Tim Straub in 1989 -- shot a final round, four-under par round of 68. Entering the tournament, Moore had not finished better than 26th in any tournament this season. The Marshville, N.C. native birdied four of the first seven holes to reach 11-under and grabbed a three shot lead, but a bogey on the ninth hole gave Moore a two-shot lead at the turn.
Moore then recorded pars on the next eight holes. Ferguson regained the lead with three straight birdies on the 11th, 12th and 13th holes to reach 11-under, but a bogey on the 15th hole left the two tied with three holes to play. Both players had pars on the 16th and 17th, but Moore birdied the par-5, 558-yard 18th hole, while Ferguson was only able to manage a par.
Moore (70-67-68=205) finished at 11-under par -- lowest score to par in Wake Forest history at the ACC Championships. Moore is the 19th Demon Deacon to capture the ACC Championship and the first freshman since Jay Haas won the 1973 ACC Individual Title. Ferguson (69-67-70=206) finished at 10-under par, while Matt Hendrix (70-68-70=208) of Clemson placed third at eight-under.
The Demon Deacons (283-286-276=845) finished at 19-under par. Their three-round total of 845 and 19-under are both all-time lows at the ACC Championship. The previous lows were 851 and 13-under, both established at the 2002 ACC Championship.
Wake Forest still finished eight shots back of Clemson. The Tigers (-27), last season's NCAA Champion, captured their second consecutive ACC Team Title. Clemson (284-275-278=837) fired an impressive round of 10-under par 278. Georgia Tech (290-284-274=848) carded the low round of the day with a 14-under par round of 274 and finished in third place. NC State (288-278-288=854) -- who was second after the first two rounds -- struggled on Sunday afternoon with an even-par round of 288 and ended up fourth at 10-under par. North Carolina (288-291-277=856) earned fifth place with a final round of 11-under par 277. Duke (287-293-277=857) finished sixth at seven-under par, while Florida State (+11), Virginia (+18) and Maryland (+41) rounded out the rest of the field.
Deacon senior, first-round leader and the nation's top-ranked golfer Bill Haas (67-73-69=209) finished fifth at seven-under par. Haas -- who finished in the top-six in each of his four appearances at the ACC Championship -- entered the day at four-under, and then birdied the opening hole. After eight pars, along with one bogey, Haas began to make a move with birdies at the 11th, 12th, 13th and 15th, but a bogey at the 16th left Haas three shots back with only two holes to play. Haas was trying to join his father Jay as the only father-son combination to capture ACC individual titles.
Demon Deacon sophomore Kyle Reifers (75-72-68=215) fired a four-under par round of 68 to climb into the top-20 - finishing in a tie for 17th place at one-under par. Reifers not only birdied four straight holes on the front nine, the sophomore aced the 191-yard 14th hole. It was the only hole-in-one of the ACC Championship.
WFU junior Doug Manchester (71-74-71=216) shot a one-under par round of 71 to finish in a tie for 19th place at even par. Manchester birdied three of the final seven holes -- including the 18th.
Freshman Chad Wilcox (75-78-75=228) shot a three-over round of 75 and ended up in 40th place at 12-over par.
