Men's Golf In Second Place at ACC Championship

April 16, 2004

NEW LONDON, N.C. - Three players shot under par as Wake Forest carded a five-under 283 to currently sit in second place after the first round of the ACC Men's Golf Championship. The 51st annual tournament is taking place at Old North State Club at Uwharrie Point.

The Demon Deacons are two strokes back of field leader North Carolina, which shot a 281 in Friday's opening round. All nine ACC teams are participating in the three-day, 54-hole tournament on the par 72, 7,102-yard layout.

Clemson, the defending ACC and national champion, shot a 284 and is third, one stroke back of WFU. Duke is fourth at -1, while NC State is fifth at even par. Georgia Tech (+2), Florida State (+7), Virginia (+7) and Maryland (+9) round out the rest of the field.

Deacon senior Bill Haas birdied five holes on the back nine to shoot a five-under 67 on Friday and lead the individual race. His 67 ties a WFU record for low individual round in an ACC Tournament. He holds a one-stroke lead over Duke's Ryan Blaum and North Carolina's Martin Ureta, who both turned in a 68.

WFU junior Doug Manchester and freshman Sean Moore were two of only 13 players to shoot under par on Friday. Moore carded a two-under 70 and currently sits in a tie for sixth place. Manchester tied his career low for the second time in as many weeks, shooting a one-under 71 to tie for 11th.

Sophomore Kyle Reifers and freshman Chad Wilcox both turned in three-over 75s on Friday and are tied for 31st in the individual standings.

The second round of the ACC Championship gets underway Saturday at 8:30 a.m. Tee times and live scoring are available at www.golfstat.com.
